Questions to Ask Before Booking a Cottage
Important questions about access, water, beds, rules, services, safety, and costs before booking a cottage.
A good question protects both the guest and the host. It identifies missing information before money changes hands and creates a written record of what was represented. The goal is not to interrogate the owner; it is to clarify the details that affect your group.
Ask only what the listing and rules do not already answer. Specific questions receive more useful answers than broad requests such as “Is it family friendly?”
Access and arrival
Rural addresses can involve private roads, ferries, gates, unmarked lanes, or winter-only limitations. Ask whether an ordinary vehicle can reach the property, how many cars can park, when directions are sent, and whether late arrival is practical. Confirm stairs, paths, dock access, and luggage distance.
- Is four-wheel drive required in the expected conditions?
- Is parking beside the cottage or at a separate lot?
- How is entry handled during a power or mobile outage?
Water, utilities, and communication
Clarify whether tap water is drinkable, whether the property uses a well or lake intake, and whether guests should bring drinking water. Ask about septic limits, power reliability, heating, cooling, internet, mobile reception, and backup systems. These details matter more in remote areas.
- Is the tap water considered safe to drink?
- What internet service is provided and where is reception strongest?
- What happens if the power fails?
Sleeping, supplies, and equipment
Ask for the exact bed configuration, bedroom locations, and whether linens and towels are included. Confirm kitchen basics, barbecue fuel, life-jacket sizes, firewood, outdoor furniture, boats, and child equipment. Do not assume an item shown in a photograph remains available.
- Are pillows, blankets, sheets, bath towels, and beach towels supplied?
- Which boats or watercraft may guests use?
- Are life jackets supplied in suitable sizes?
Rules, costs, and problems
Confirm occupancy, visitors, pets, noise, fires, smoking, charging vehicles, cancellations, deposits, damage procedures, and checkout duties. Ask who should be contacted during the stay and what response is available for urgent maintenance.
- What charges are not included in the displayed total?
- What should guests do if equipment fails?
- Which checkout tasks are mandatory?
Practical checklist
- Road and parking access clarified
- Water source and drinking guidance confirmed
- Exact bed layout and supplied linens checked
- Internet, mobile service, heat, and cooling clarified
- Watercraft and life-jacket rules confirmed
- All fees, deposits, cancellation terms, and chores understood
Bottom line
Ask direct questions tied to the group’s needs. A clear answer before booking is easier and cheaper than solving a preventable problem after arrival.
